Bruce's Bio...
Bruce Deaton has one of the most delightfully creative and diverse musical careers in America, Canada and Europe, today.  For more than twenty years he has performed in every state of the continental United States, the Western Provinces of Canada, France, and Italy. He is an accomplished conductor, composer, guitarist, record producer, and teacher.

Mr. Deaton has guest conducted the San Francisco Ballet, the Louisville Orchestra, the Spokane Symphony, The Winston-Salem Symphony, the Youngstown Symphony and Chorus, the Schenectady Symphony and numerous orchestras at the Aspen Music Festival, among others.

Mr. Deaton is the Director of the American Institute of Dalcroze Eurhythmics. The Institute presented teacher-training workshops in the summer of 2005.  They were hosted at the Music Conservatory of Westchester, August 8-12, 2005 in White Plains, New York.

Mr. Deaton leads the Dalcroze Eurhythmics program for the Starling Prep String Program at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. He teaches Eurhythmics, Solfege, and Improvisation. His students are among the top young violinists from all over the world. The Program’s Starling Chamber Orchestra tours globally and has numerous recordings.

In 2002, his unique abilities in Eurhythmics culminated in his award by the Juilliard School in New York City of the Dalcroze Certificate and the Dalcroze License. In the twelve years that Juilliard has sponsored the Dalcroze Institute, Robert Abramson, the Director of the Institute, has awarded only six musicians the Dalcroze License.

Mr. Deaton’s career began as the Assistant Music Director of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic in Poughkeepsie, New York. While there, he developed the largest educational program with a Regional orchestra in the country. Conducting pops, young peoples concerts, family concerts and in-school tours he created new audiences with a passion for all of the living arts. Artists he collaborated with included James Earl Jones, Don McLean, Stephanie Chase, and Alexander Toradze. An advocate of new music, he premiered many new works for orchestra. He conducted Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat in 50 performances introducing thousands of people to music, dance and drama.

In 2000, Mr. Deaton was invited by the Vatican to perform in front of 2 million people before the Papal Vigil at World Youth Day in Rome. The United States Catholic Conference of Bishops invited Mr. Deaton to lead music at the largest gatherings of English speaking young people at the Basilica St. Paul-Outside the Wall in Rome, with Cardinal Francis Arinze. In 1997, The USCCB invited him to lead music at World Youth Day in Paris, again at the largest gathering of English speaking youth with Cardinal Francis George.

He has recordings with Oregon Catholic Press, No Doubt Records, and a video series with The Center for Learning. He has been featured on RAI Television (Italy), CNN, and presented a 30-minute program ‘Backstage’ on EWTN, the Global Catholic Network.

Currently Mr. Deaton is the Music Director at St. Francis DeSales Church, and Co-director at the Cathedral St. Peter in Chains in Cincinnati, for the Contemporary Mass.

His principle teachers were famed conducting pedagogue Leon Barzin in Paris, Gunther Schuller, Murry Sidlin, and Charles Bruck. He studied guitar with Celin Romero at San Diego State University where he received his Bachelor's Degree. He studied with Dalcroze Eurhythmics experts Robert Abramson in New York, and Marta Sanchez at Carnegie Mellon University, where he received his MFA in Conducting, studying choral conducting with Robert Page, and instrumental conducting with Istvan Jaray.
